Holy Trinity School (HTS)
Our first visit to HTS was a fact finding tour, we were shown around the schools ICT provision and told that the system had become so unreliable that the ICT teachers had lost all faith in the facility being able to deliver the planned lessons.
We could see that although they had a very good physical network, they had old and slow networking hardware. The server was old beyond economical upgrade and the workstations were running Windows 98, they also had an Advantis CD Server that was very unreliable and becoming almost impossible to add new CD patterns to.
The school had no virus checking software installed and the workstations were riddled with viruses.
The school had been put on the Borough Broadband connection but was not using it to maximum effect. FirstClass was not installed.
Problems Solved
- We decided to build a new server for HTS to keep the costs down and install Windows 2000 Server.
- Workstations needed to have RAM upgrades to enable them to run Windows XP Workstation.
- A workstation was installed with all of the software from the school and a pattern of that workstation was installed on all of the others in the school to keep continuity.
- Users were set up on the server with policies and profiles implemented to keep them away from anything that could harm the network.
- Printers were shared to the network to allow all computers to print.
- A new 100 MB switch was installed in the network cabinet to speed the network up.
- FirstClass, Sophos Anti virus, Internet and all curriculum software was installed on every machine.
- Teachers were given some training on their new network to enable them to use it, report any problems and help to restore faith in their ICT provision.
